Recently, Tiny Tickers’ Head of Health Professional Services, Anne Rhodes, travelled to Gilbert Bain Hospital, Shetland to deliver our specialist fetal cardiac training to midwife-sonographers there.
As well as delegates from Shetland, Anne welcomed sonographers from Orkney, whose long journey to the training day included two flights. This commitment to developing their skills and helping to improve the early detection of congenital heart defects was commendable.
The training day started with a presentation, which included discussion about Tiny Tickers’ work, different types of heart conditions and who should be referred for a fetal echo, while also looking at the anatomy of the fetal heart.
The hands-on, practical training took place in the hospital’s scanning room, using the sonographers’ own equipment to scan pregnant volunteers.

Anne said: “I have been struck by the dedication and commitment of the sonographers in this part of the world who have travelled by two aeroplanes in order to attend Tiny Tickers hands-on sonographer training.
“These midwife sonographers are highly skilled. Their work encompasses every stage of the maternity pathway, from early pregnancy right through to postnatal support.
“The training day went smoothly with all attendees enthusiastic and fully engaged.
“Thank you for inviting us, it’s been a pleasure!”
